As we gather to worship, let us pause to remember that in this region we live and work and worship on lands that are, by law, the unceded territories of the Mi’kmaq. May we live with respect on this land and live in peace and friendship with its people.
We light this candle/fire as a symbol of the light of LOVE, which cannot be held back by distance, which shines in each one of us, no matter where we are.
With this in mind, we pray:
God whose presence can be felt around us in this peaceful setting,
We pray that this time of worship fills us with a sense of your presence filling us with peace and contentment. We pray that this feeling leads us to find your presence among us as we worship and spend time together. Amen.
Questions for reflection, journaling or discussion on Parker Palmer’s Rules for Inner Work (allow approx 10 mins)
Have you ever experienced a community where you were truly witnessed as described by Parker Palmer?
How can witnessing another person’s humanity work as an act of love?
How do you know you can trust someone with your vulnerability? Is that trust an act of witness or love in itself?
How do we as a community of faith offer this act of witnessing the humanity of others? In other words, how can we bring our understanding of 1 John 4:7-21into fruition?
What makes you nervous about witnessing the humanity of others? What do you need to overcome your nervousness?
If you watched/read “Circles” with your littles print the exercise on pg 4 and 5-9 (10-14 b&w version) of this resource and offer each circle a simple blessing of “Thank you for being you and being in my circle. May I/we be a part of your circle too.”
Gather yourselves in a circle to pray:
God designs sacred circles all around us:
We pray with thanksgiving for all of those who have circled in and out of lives. We pray for those who have moved within our circles helping us each day to live with a deep sense of love.
We pray with deep gratitude for those who help us to see love within the Musquodoboit Valley, those who help us build community, care for others and care for the earth.
We pray, with thanksgiving, for those who help to shape Nova Scotian society in a way that feels authentic and true to our relaxed and open culture.
We pray for all of those in our circles that we haven’t met yet. We pray that we might find ourselves in one of their circles too.
As we join our voices together, we remember the one who taught us the joy of being open to having others in our circles:
Our Father/Mother/Creator…. (Your favourite version on the prayer that Jesus taught)
Carry a flame to kindle the darkness, to illuminate the path, to keep the shadows from overtaking. Share this light widely and gladly and keep it safe until we meet again. Amen.
